coffee barista cappuccino moody portrait oil painting by south african artist charles foley

The scene is of a moment of quiet introspection amidst the warmth of MOJO@110, a cozy coffee shop nestled within an indoor plant nursery during winter. The painting invites viewers into the tranquil atmosphere where Mikey stands behind his espresso machine, engaged in the rhythmic ritual of cleaning a portafilter.

Inspired by Edward Hopper’s voyeuristic POV approach of portraying private/personal moments of solitude, the piece shares an observed undisturbed moment, where the world view of an individual is considered within their surroundings.

The focal point of the composition is Mikey, bathed in soft winter sunlight streaming through a large window behind him. Despite the chilly season outside, the interior exudes a comforting warmth, hinted at by Mikey’s attire and the gentle wash of light falling over the indoor scene. The space is a reflection of Mikey’s introspective moment - a sanctuary from the outer-world.

This documentary piece serves to simply share a moment frozen in time—a quiet interlude in the bustling rhythm of daily life. It invites viewers to pause; savour the simplicity of a well-brewed cortado and find a space/moment for themselves in the gentle repetition of everyday rituals. It is a testament to the power of art to pause time, provoke thought, and transport us to places of quiet reflection.
